Mycobacterium scrofulaceum: a bacterial contaminant in plant tissue culture

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The identification of a widespread contaminant of plant cell cultures is reported. Mycobacterium scr~luhtceum Prissick and Masson appears as yellow colonies on the medium and plant tissues of many ornamentals being propagated in vitro. It is a Gram positive and acid fast bacterium and requires a specifically formulated medium for growth in pure culture. Many laboratories have alluded to this contaminant but have been unable to identify it because of its culture requirements.

Characterization of Proinflammatory Responses and Innate Signaling Activation in Macrophages Infected with Mycobacterium scrofulaceum

Mycobacterium scrofulaceum is an environmental and slow-growing atypical mycobacterium. Emerging evidence suggests that M. scrofulaceum infection is associated with cervical lymphadenitis in children and pulmonary or systemic infections in immunocompromised adults. However, the nature of host innate immune responses to M. scrofulaceum remains unclear. In this study, we examined the innate immun...

Factors influencing the chlorine susceptibility of Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, and Mycobacterium scrofulaceum.

The susceptibility of representative strains of Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, and Mycobacterium scrofulaceum (the MAIS group) to chlorine was studied to identify factors related to culture conditions and growth phase that influenced susceptibility. M. avium and M. intracellulare strains were more resistant to chlorine than were strains of M. scrofulaceum. Transparent and un...

Knee arthropathy secondary to Mycobacterium scrofulaceum.

Atypical mycobacteria have been described as long as 36 years ago, but it has only been in the last 10 years that the ability of these organisms to cause disease in man has been recognized. The most common pathological processes with which the atypical mycobacteria are associated occur in the lungs and in the cervical lymph nodes. More rare is joint pathology. We describe here a case of knee ar...

Identification of cytoplasmic membrane protein antigens of Mycobacterium avium, M. intracellulare, and M. scrofulaceum.

The cytoplasmic membrane isolated from representative strains of the Mycobacterium avium, M. intracellulare, and M. scrofulaceum (MAIS) group contained approximately 20 proteins, as identified by SDS - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. One membrane protein predominated, comprising up to 50% of the total membrane protein. This major cytoplasmic membrane protein (MCMP) had a molecular weight of...

Accumulation and transport of cadmium by tolerant and susceptible strains of Mycobacterium scrofulaceum.

Cadmium accumulation and transport were studied in two strains of Mycobacterium scrofulaceum differing in their susceptibility to Cd2+ toxicity. A 10-fold excess of either Zn2+ or Mn2+ partially antagonized inhibition of growth by Cd2+. 109Cd2+ uptake by both the tolerant and susceptible strains was temperature dependent and inhibited by a 10-fold excess of either Zn2+ or Mn2+. There were no si...
